Throughout Canada today, girls face overwhelming challenges to their mental health, confidence, and safety. As early as ages 9 to 13, many girls experience a dramatic decline in their self-worth and emotional well-being. They also face higher risk of violence and assault, with rates that are seven times higher than those faced by boys and young men. For girls who are Indigenous, Black, gender-diverse, or living with disabilities, the challenges can be even bigger.
These risks are compounded by the fact that girls are often discouraged from pursuing fields in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), where boys enroll at twice the rate. The damaging effects of sexist stereotypes and early sexualization start young and can last a lifetime.
